In the years following the year 2020, many service-based businesses

moved to requiring deposits but what is the reason behind salons charging deposits?  Some people have reservations but there is a very good reason for it!

In the past, there would be the odd clients that were no-shows.  It was so rare, salons did

not care.  Since 2020, however, this has changed dramatically.  Not one, but several clients doing last minute cancellations or not calling or showing up at all became significantly higher.

In the uncertain work

climate that followed that tumultuous year, what was a service provider to do?  We accommodated as much as we could but when the bill payments started falling behind, something had to be done.

Many salons started online bookings because of the distance restrictions and with that, a

deposit fee was required.  This helped to do three things:

  • It brought in clients that were interested in our services.
  • We no longer had money tied up in more costly inventory that we  bought specifically for that service.
  • Clients that are notorious for calling for last minute appointments and when not successful, booking elsewhere without cancelling, were more wary of doing so after paying a deposit.

I hope this is helpful for the people curious as to what is the reason behind salons charging deposits.  Salons understand that picking up shifts is important to pay the bills but we are trying to fulfill our obligations too.
