Periodically, there are people who are against the established norms
and wish to know “how do you freeform dreadlocks”. They do not like looking like everyone else and will go to extremes to be different!
Freeform dreadlocks are done as the name suggests:
- Hair is left uncombed and unbrushed.
- Hair is washed as normal but apart from pulling them apart, nothing is done.
- No attempt is made to make structured partings.
- The idea is to make the hair lock on its own with almost no maintenance.
While I was growing up, guys did not ask “how do you
freeform dreadlocks”, they just stopped all grooming on the hair and face. Their family and/or relatives would be annoyed but they would navigate it. I did find that eventually there has to be some attempt at order when there were issues such as:
- Sections that are breaking off because they were too tiny or it was difficult for it to survive on the thin root.
- The roots are sticking together and it is hard to get the fingers through them.
- Batches of hair joined together, so instead of e.g. 100 locs, you now have twenty large ones.
- Life changes such as new employment, now require you to have better managed hair.
- Issues such as balding or hair loss.
- Aging and the need to reform extra-long hair.
