I have been seeing examples of what could go wrong when you

interlock improperly with new clients.  I do not interlock myself, but I do get clients who grow concerned when their dreads/locs are falling off or hanging by a strand!

Interlocking, which is when the

dread/loc is pulled through the root in a specific order, is favoured by those people who:

  • like their hair sticking tightly to their scalp.
  • do not want to pay an expensive amount for dread/loc maintenance.
  • like the maintenance time to be extremely short.
  • interlocking is the only maintenance method available.

What could go wrong when you interlock improperly?

  1. There is breakage around the root area of the dread/loc.  In some cases, the dread/loc is literally hanging by a strand of hair.
  2. There are sections of the head that the hair has broken off, leaving no way to reattach a dread/loc.
  3. For the hairline, there will be these short bumps of hair where it was snapped off.
  4. The client gets distressed when their dreads/locs break off.

If you choose to use the interlocking method, kindly ensure:

  • When you leave your hair appointment, you can still move your face,
  • Your head should not feel so tight you cannot sleep.
  • If you have fine hair or thin dreads, you monitor your hair for breakage.

As a stylist, if you choose to use interlocking as your maintenance method, review caring for hair and observe the pulling on the client’s scalp at the root area.  If too many of your clients have severe breakage  this is the example of what could go wrong when you interlock improperly.
