Over the years, clients who are always in the gym have asked “can too
much exercise cause hair loss?” Regular exercise is great for the body – it keeps you and your figure happy but it has been said that too much exercise can cause hair loss!
This question is not meant for you to stop exercising. On the contrary, exercising is good. What we are
talking about is more the nutritional intake for persons who wish to bulk up or enter body building competitions etc. For such folks who started having some hair loss, I did note the following:
- hair loss is a result of drastic changes to their diet. They eat foods that are essential to keep the body toned and fit. However, meals often lacked green vegetables and carbohydrates. I know they say carbs are bad but the body needs some. Also, at some point, when workouts required shredding for muscle definition the food quality intake was questionable.
- Wearing tight hairstyles, head bands, hats etc causes hair loss around the hair line and sometimes at the top.
- Lack of enough sleep because of the timing of workouts. Many were having less hours of sleep from rising at 4:30 in the morning.
- Many of those exercising put hair care on hold while they completed the workout programme resulting in the hair loss.

If you are planning on working out and are asking “can too much exercise cause hair loss”, this is a real thing so making a schedule to cover all areas including hair care is essential.
