Regarding the question:  “can I ask a hairstylist to choose a hairstyle for

me?” I would say yes, you certainly can.  A good hairstylist should be able to take in your facial features along with other factors and recommend a hairstyle.  However, for a better experience, you should come with an example of what you hope to do!

For many people choosing a new hairstyle is not easy.  Over my career, I still have questions on the

chaos that ensues when the style chosen by some clients does not appear as they envisioned.  So many times, we mutually lost hours only to return to what is comfortable.  Mostly, the person has a look in mind but not the self confidence to make the change, be it a color, cut or style.

If you are thinking of changing your hairstyle, here are a few things you should do:

  •  Schedule a consultation time with the stylist before committing if you have any doubts or to find out if it is will work for you.
  • Please make sure you want the change.   You are not doing it for your significant other, cooler friends or some celebrity trend.
  • Find a picture that has the haircut you like.
  • Try to get a model with a similar face shape as yourself.
  • Unless you intend on adding hair extensions, make sure you have enough hair to do so.
  • Be sure to ask how much maintaining this style will cost – short  haircuts need regular maintenance and a longer time to grow out.
  • Ask about what kind of care it will require
  • Talk with the stylist about your styling abilities to get the look each day.
  • Will you need to buy additional products/accessories?
  • Tell the hair stylist about any scalp conditions you have e.g. bald spots from accidents etc.
  •   I once did a haircut on a lady who hid a bald spot on her head but asked for a pixie cut.  When I snipped a part of her combover she flipped.  If she had been upfront with the information, I could have said it would not be possible.
  • If at all possible, try to simulate the look with your hair so you are not traumatized on the day of.  You can do this with a wig, pinning up your hair.
