Your dreads/locs may have become thinner over time and you want to know
“how can I make my dreads thicker?” This happens to many people on their locking journey!
It is quite normal for dreads/locs to thin over time because the hair will change as the
hair gets longer and heavier. To understand “how can I make my dreads thicker” you should understand the reason the hair got thin. Thinning may have been caused by:
- dreads/locs were started with short hair
- The parting for the dread/loc is too small to hold it because of the length
- Client will not stop eating junk food and have a balanced diet
- Keeping hairstyles for too long
- Wearing the hair without maintenance for months
- Choosing hairstyles that break the hair in several points along the dread/loc.
To help clients repair their hair, one needs experience. This comes with time. Sometimes
I have unique situations and I have to be creative for the repair to appear seamless. I have seen repairs that did not work because of:
- Adding hair extensions, which were similar to the hair, but get old and snag easily with time.
- Adding extensions adds weight to the hair which is not helpful for those with thin hair.
- Wrapping with thread – this gets messy quickly because the thread will “pop” out of the hair over time.
- Joining the roots but only half way, leaving the ends free. This makes the hair look wild and is not suitable if you are a very structured person.
For a repair on “how can I make my dreads thicker”, I want to see the hair and understand what is happening because the reason is different for everyone. It could be as easy as joining one or a few dreads/locs together depending on the reason for the desire for thickness. I have always preferred using thread over knotting because it is mostly undetectable. Different locticians use different methods, therefore, you have to do your research to find what will work for you.
