You now have the hairstyle of your dreams but you realize you also

got dandruff!  After the first three weeks you start asking: is dandruff normal for starter locks?  No one likes to be itchy or see white dust on their clothing!  Dandruff  annoys  everyone, regardless of your choice of hairstyle!

If you got dreadlocks and are wondering if dandruff is normal for starter locks, the answer

is yes!  Why?   Managing dreadlocks is a major change in your hair routine.  Over the years, I have noted two of the most common instances that cause dandruff in the hair when you make dreadlocks.  They are:

  • Using certain commercial shampoos.  If a product promises to get rid of dandruff and 3 months later your hair is still dry and itchy, throw it out.  See your doctor or speak with a pharmacist but change it.
  • If you were washing the hair daily or twice a day before getting dreadlocks, your scalp will continue to produces oil as before!  This comes in the form of dandruff.  You should have your scalp cleaned and along with using the right shampoo, your scalp will return to normal.

If you are one of the people that fell in any of these categories, I hope we answered the question:  is dandruff normal for starter locks.  If you get the proper shampoo,  your scalp will return to normal after three months.
